The purpose of the basic level Disaster Services training is to provide an overview of the activities performed by the Community Services group in support of a disaster relief operation.
Who can participate? Anyone who is interested in becoming a Disaster volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion
Into Community Action

This course will enable individual volunteers to translate their care and compassion for their community into action and provide information to other community agencies on Red Cross work and possible partnership in preparation for and response to a disaster.After completing this course, participants will be able to apply the Fundamental Principles and Values of the Red Cross, explain the American Red Cross Mission, identify the five constituents of the Red Cross, recognize the different needs and describe how Red Cross organizes around meeting those needs.

Mass Care: Overview

This course will provide an overview of the activities which include sheltering, mobile & fixed feeding, bulk distribution, and community programs performed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation and explain how Mass Care workers deliver quality service to clients.

Shelter Operations

This course will prepare Red Cross workers to manage shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.After completing this course, participants will be able to describe the procedures for opening, operating and closing shelters, organize available human resources as a shelter operations team, identify resources available to assist shelter workers, and organize the physical facility and material resources to meet the needs of the people in the shelter.

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance

This course is designed to train Red Cross caseworkers how to conduct effective client interviews, assess client needs and determine the appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs using the tools and resources available to caseworkers.
