Giving Blood - What you need to know!

1. It is advisable to eat a well-balanced meal within four hours before giving blood.  Be sure to drink plenty of fluids befoure and after giving blood.  These are the most important things you can do to ensure that you have a good donation experience.

2.  Donors must be at least 16-years-old.  There is no upper age limit.

3.  You are required to bring your driver's license or blood donor card or 2 other forms of ID.

4.  Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds.  The average person has 10-12 pints of blood: you donate about one pint.

5.  The donation process takes about one hour.  Six to eight minutes of that time is spent giving blood.  The most time is spent doing a health check to ensure that it is absolutely safe for you to give blood and for patients to recieve your blood components.

6.  Avoid strenuous activity for a few hours after giving blood.  Your body is already replacing the fluid loss.  Your fluid levels will be back to normal within 24 hours.

7.  You are eligible to give blood every 56 days.
